Hong Kong celebrity couple Carina Lau and Tony Leung Chiu Wai have been in a loving relationship for 35 years and their romance is one to be envied.
In the latest episode of Lau’s talk show Jia Ren Zi You Yue, actress Charlie Yeung – who appeared as a guest – inquired about the most romantic thing Leung, 61, has done for her.
After taking several moments to think of an answer, Lau, 58, responded: “There was one year where I was very touched. Tony was in Vietnam filming a show at the time.”
The actress shared that she and her husband are used to not seeing each other for long periods of time due to the nature of their job.
“My doorbell suddenly rang and when I opened the door, he was holding a camera and snapping photos of my expressions,” she recounted with a laugh.
Lau also gushed over Leung’s romantic gestures that never fail to put a smile on her face.
“He knows how to make me happy,” she said before continuing, “Sometimes, whenever he is away, he would fly back home for a few hours just to celebrate my birthday with me.
“It is gestures like these that make me feel he is very thoughtful.”
Lau and Leung, who started dating in 1989 after meeting on the set of the 1984 drama The Clones, tied the knot in Bhutan in 2008.
In another episode, Yeung, 49, revealed that Leung had made the effort to visit Lau during the filming of Intimates (1997), which was shot mainly in Hangzhou, China.
Lau said she remembers the visit, adding: “We need to create romance for each other. I think we need to take it upon ourselves to create beautiful memories.”
Lau also joked that Leung only took initiative when he was courting her, adding that it was “remarkable” how they managed to stay together for so many years.
“Perhaps it is because we grew up together and know each other well,” she said.
But all jokes aside, Lau made it clear that Leung is a “professional ” whom she has come to respect throughout their years together.
“He learned to play the piano at 60 years old just for one scene in a movie and visited neurologists in Hong Kong to prepare for his role as a neurologist,” she said.
According to reports, Leung devoted two months to mastering a piano piece for the 2022 crime thriller Where The Wind Blows.
The actor’s dedication persists as he gears up to portray a neurologist in Hungarian director Ildiko Enyedi’s upcoming movie Silent Friend, which will begin production next month.
