The trailer to the upcoming Hong Kong film Twilight Of The Warriors: Walled In – scheduled to hit cinemas nationwide on May 1 – showcases a number of action-packed sequences.
Featured in the trailer and in one of those action scenes is none other than martial artist Sammo Hung.
The 72-year-old is returning to the big screen with this film after being on hiatus since 2017, when he underwent knee surgery. It's reported that he was wheelchair-bound for sometime and then had to use a cane to walk.
Hence, it's good to see the screen legend back where he belongs – in an action film, doing what he does best, taking down his opponents.
Twilight Of The Warriors: Walled In has quite a number of things working for it besides Hung.
For one, it is directed by Soi Cheang (SPLII: A Time Of Consequences, The Monkey King series), and produced by Wilson Yip Wai Sun (Ip Man series, Flashpoint) and John Chong (Infernal Affairs series, Initial D).
It also stars Louis Koo, Richie Jen, Raymond Lam, Terrance Lau and Tony Wu.
According to a report, the film's budget is HK$300mil (RM182mil), making it one of the most expensive Hong Kong productions of all time.
It is set at the iconic Kowloon Walled City, a densely populated area where little houses were stacked on top of each other that was demolished 30 years ago.
Producer Chong told Variety in 2023: “We were aiming for the look and feel of a Louis Cha novel. So our story is fictional but we paid great attention to getting the historical details correct.
“I can personally testify to the amazing work of the production designer, as I lived in the Walled City for a time when I was a college student.”
Based on cult manga series City Of Darkness, the film follows Chan Lok-kwun as he accidentally enters the Walled City.
There he becomes close friends with some other residents. When their homes are threatened by baddies, it is up to Lok-kwun and his buddies to stop them.
