Hong Kong director Stephen Chow, known for his sense of humour, marked his 62nd birthday on June 22 with a video of him “dancing” with popular Japanese dance group Avantgardey.
The 17-member all-female dance team, formed in 2022, are known for their synchronised dance moves and funny expressions. They rose to international fame after taking part and reaching the finals in reality talent show America’s Got Talent in 2023.
“I prepared myself thoroughly to dance and make friends with @avantgardey_, aiming to stay in trend,” Chow wrote in both English and Chinese. “It turns out I was outdated already. The song Trendy Now is already last season’s trend.”
In the video shared on Instagram on June 22, he was sitting with his back to the camera. Six members of Avantgardey entered the room with Hong Kong singer-actor Louis Koo’s song Trendy Now playing.
Chow was planning to get grooving when the song changed to Malaysian trio Steady Gang’s song Chou Xing Chi, which sounds like the director’s Chinese name.
He threw up his hands before gradually moving along to Chou Xing Chi.
The video has received more than 220,000 “likes” in less than 24 hours, with Tomato, one of the members of Steady Gang, commenting under Chow’s post: “I can really brag about this until I am 90.”
Meanwhile, Chinese actress Jelly Lin, who rose to fame after acting in Chow’s romantic fantasy film The Mermaid (2016), wished Chow happy birthday with nine photos of him when he was younger.
“The other day, someone said many people have overlooked Sing Yeh’s looks due to his humour,” the 28-year-old wrote, referring to Chow’s nickname. “So here are the handsome photos of him which I trawled from the internet, as I hope everyone will always remember Stephen Chow the handsome man.” – The Straits Times/Asia News Network
