Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Friday took time to meet with renowned Indian actor Kamal Haasan, who was in Malaysia to promote his new film Indian 2.

"During breaks from official duties, I had the opportunity to spend time with the well-known Indian artiste and superstar, Kamal Haasan. We had about 30 minutes to talk and exchange views on the film industry, including our stance against corruption,” he said in a Facebook post.

Kamal was in the capital to promote the film Indian 2, the sequel to his 1996 blockbuster Indian.

The 70-year-old actor said his fans’ enthusiasm provide him with the essential motivation and platform to thrive and succeed in the film industry.

"Your unwavering support is the reason I stand before you today, dressed in this suit, which is why during every film release of mine, I make it a point to come all the way and meet all of you,” Kamal told fans at an event held at a KL mall over the weekend to promote Indian 2.

Indian, released in 1996, featured Kamal as a freedom fighter rebelling against corruption in India, which also creates conflict with his son involved in corrupt practices.

The film went on to be the highest-grossing Tamil film upon its release.

Reflecting on his political career, Kamal revealed that he had considered stepping away from the film industry.

”Upon entering politics, I considered leaving cinema to serve my people, but recognising your continued expectations, I decided to pursue both, prompting my return to acting,” he said at the event.

The actor made a decisive entry into politics in 2018 by founding his party, Makkal Needhi Maiam, signalling a significant shift in his career towards advocating for societal change through active political engagement. – Bernama
