Malaysian movie producer Rachel Tan released her latest movie, Sight, to more than 2,000 screens across the United States recently. The 100-minute film stars Oscar nominee Greg Kinnear and Terry Chen, and has grossed over US$7mil to date.
Sight tells the true story of Dr Ming Wang, a world-renowned eye surgeon who overcame adversity to become a medical pioneer.
“This film is not just a testament to Dr Ming Wang's extraordinary life but also a celebration of perseverance, love, hope, and reconciliation,” Tan said in a press release.
“As a Malaysian, I am proud to bring Asian stories and talents to Hollywood, bridging cultures and showcasing the diversity that enriches the film industry,” added Tan who is currently based in the US.
Her commitment as a producer has been instrumental in bringing this inspiring story to life.
Tan said: “Hollywood, through what it produces, shapes a lot of cultural beliefs for the rest of the world. Through this movie, we want to have more Asian stories and talent represented behind and in front of the camera.
"Who will tell stories where Asians have been a source of inspiration and force for good if we do not?”
If Tan's name is familiar, that's because the 42-year-old is a former Miss Malaysia and the first Malaysian to win TVB’s Miss Chinese International pageant.
In addition to Sight, Tan and her husband Dan Mark – who co-founded Kingstreet Pictures in 2016 – are working on their next film, a romantic comedy based on their love story called Worth The Wait.
The film, currently in post-production, was partially shot in Kuala Lumpur and stars Lana Condor, Andrew Koji and Ross Butler.
