Three years after the release of the hit K-drama, Squid Game, Netflix has announced a second season, set to premiere on the streaming platform on Dec 26.
A third and final season will also be released next year.
This latest update was shared with fans worldwide in a heartfelt letter from director Hwang Dong-hyuk, who is also the show's executive producer and writer.
“Wow, I can't believe I'm back in the world of Squid Game. It almost felt surreal.
“I am thrilled to see the seed that was planted in creating a new Squid Game grow and bear fruit through the end of this story,” said Hwang, 53.
The second season of Squid Game sees award-winning actor Lee Jung-jae reprising his role as Seong Gi-hun, better known as Player 456.
In the latest instalment, Seong is on a mission to dismantle the organisation behind the deadly survival Squid Game, which he won three years prior.
He starts by tracking down The Frontman (Lee Byung-hun), who’s the overseer of the Squid Game. However, things take a turn when he realises he must re-enter the competition in order to end it.
The first season of Squid Game was a phenomenal hit, amassing 1.65 billion viewing hours in its first four weeks and becoming Netflix's most-watched series at that time.
It broke barriers as the first non-English-language show to earn Emmy nominations for Outstanding Drama Series, with the cast receiving widespread acclaim.
Actor Lee Jung-jae and actress Lee You-mi won the Emmy in the Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series and Outstanding Guest Actress In A Drama Series respectively.
