Congratulatory messages keep pouring in for Malaysia's dynamic duo Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik after they clinched the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics on Sunday night (Aug 4).
The latest to wish the guys a job well done is Oscar winner Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh.
The Ipoh-born actress posted a photo of Aaron and Wooi Yik with their bronze medals on Instagram with the message: "Congratulations. So proud and happy that our Malaysian boys won the Bronze medal."
Yeoh and her husband Jean Todt were in Paris to attend the opening ceremony of the Olympics on July 26. The Hollywood actress is an elected member of the International Olympics Committee.
Earlier today, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi extended his congratulations to the national men’s doubles pair.
"You both have demonstrated that with relentless determination and a strong fighting spirit, success is indeed attainable. We are immensely proud of your accomplishments. You have elevated the nation’s name on the global stage and become an inspiration to all Malaysians,” he said in a Facebook post.
MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong congratulated Aaron and Wooi Yik shortly after the pair won the medals.
“It was a fierce and thrilling match for the bronze medal in the men’s doubles badminton category,” Dr Wee said on Facebook yesterday (Aug 4).
He concluded his post with, “Congratulations Malaysia!”
In his social media post, Datuk Lee Chong Wei described the match between the Malaysian doubles pair against Denmark's Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen as a "crazy game".
The three-time Olympic silver medallist said this when praising the duo for their resilience in fighting back against the Danes.
“First Olympic medal for Malaysia! So proud of you boys. What an incredible game. A game that was supposed to be lost, but the men’s pairing from Melaka and Kuala Lumpur brought back hope step by step for the flag on their chests," said Chong Wei.
Squash legend Datuk Nicol David also posted her congratulatory message on social media.
“Words can’t describe how proud I am to see the fight in our Malaysian boys.
"It was a show of true grit and experience to come back from 20-16 down in the second game with four match points against them.
"They did not falter because they knew what they were capable of, and that comes from experience," she said.
On Sunday night, Aaron-Wooi Yik gave badminton fans a match that will be talked about for years to come. The Malaysian pair came back from the brink of defeat to beat the Danes with a superb 16-21, 22-20, 21-19, winning Malaysia's first bronze medal in Paris Olympics.
