Taiwanese actress Ning Chang recently came to Malaysia to promote her new movie, A Place Called Silence, which was shot in Penang.

During a recent press conference in Kuala Lumpur, Chang said the food was the best part about filming in Penang.

She listed laksa, cendol and fried kueh teow as some of her favourites.

“Penang has so many delicious foods! I can eat laksa day and night. Every time I finished filming, I would eat like crazy!” the 41-year-old exclaimed.

When asked if she was worried about gaining weight from eating so much, Chang replied in the negative, explaining that it’s because her character in the film is always on the go.

“Even though I eat a lot, I would burn (all the calories) during filming, so I eat (as much as I want),” she said.

A Place Called Silence is helmed by Malaysian filmmaker Sam Quah, who’s also Chang’s boyfriend.

Rumours of the pair being romantically involved have been circulating since their collaboration in the 2015 film, Detective Chinatown, which Quah co-directed.

Chang confirmed she was in a relationship with Quah, 39, last December.

During the press conference, the actress shared that she has not yet met Quah’s family due to her tight schedule.

As for wedding news, Chang said she is currently prioritising promotions for her movie.

She added: “There is no (marriage) news yet. I hope everyone watches our movie first.”

A Place Called Silence tells the story of Yutong (Angela Wang), a mute high school student who suffers relentless bullying.

Despite her mother Li Han’s (Chang) efforts to protect her, the violence only exacerbates, fuelled by the school’s collective silence.

Things take a turn when Yutong’s bullies meet gruesome ends one by one, and she mysteriously disappears.

As the investigation unfolds, long-buried secrets of corruption start to surface.

A Place Called Silence has raked in RM1mil at the local box office since its premiere on Aug 8.

It is also the second-highest grossing summer film of 2024 in China, earning RM806mil so far.

A Place Called Silence is showing at cinemas nationwide.
