Controversial director Syamsul Yusof has filed for divorce from his wife, actress Ira Kazar.
Syamsul's lawyer Azmi Rais confirmed the couple's divorce to mStar, The Star's Malay-language portal.
"It's true, Syamsul has filed for divorce from Ira this afternoon," Azmi said when contacted.
Azmi added to Buletin TV3 that Syamsul, 40, filed for divorce at the Syariah Court in Gombak Timur, Selangor at 2pm today (Monday).
"The reason given is irreconcilable differences. I will inform you about the next mention date later," Azmi said.
For the record, Syamsul and Ira, married on Jan 6, 2023 in Thailand. The Mat Kilau director shared his marital status via a video on Instagram on the same day itself.
"I want to confirm that Ira and I are legally married, in the presence of her father, Kazar, in Thailand. We decided to get married in Thailand to simplify certain things," Syamsul said in the video.
At that time, he was still legally married to his first wife Puteri Sarah Liyana. He and Puteri Sarah, who share two children, were married in 2014.
Syamsul's relationship with Ira had been gossip fodder for most of 2022. Puteri Sarah even went on social media to expose Ira as the other woman and the cause for the rift in her marriage. Syamsul and Puteri Sarah eventually divorced on June 14, 2023.
Syamsul’s father, renowned producer Datuk Yusof Haslam, said he wasn't aware that his son has filed for divorce from Ira when contacted.
"I can't give any comments because I'm not aware of this matter. (My wife, Datin Patimah Ismail, and I) have been out of touch with (Syamsul) for quite some time. He hasn't been home for a long time, so we don't know anything about it. My wife and I really can't give any comments at all," Yusof, 70, told OhBulan! portal.
