More than 100 films produced between Oct 1, 2022 and Jun 30, 2024 can qualify to compete in this year's Malaysia Film Festival (FFM), which is entering its 33rd edition.
Filmmakers can nominate their films starting from Aug 20 until Sept 6 to be part of the festival.
The winner in the festival's main category, which is the Best Film, will also receive a Digital Content Fund (DKD) grant for the amount of RM500,000.
The Deputy Communications Minister, Teo Nie Ching, announced this at a press conference held at the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) office in Hulu Kelang on Tuesday (Aug 20).
The FFM33 will be handing out 30 trophies in various categories.
In her speech, Teo said: "FFM 33 is not only aimed at appreciating artistic works and creativity within the national film industry, but also at strengthening the role of the film industry in Malaysia's socio-economic development.
"The government is always committed in supporting the growth of the industry as a dynamic economic sector, as well as reinforcing national identity and culture.
"Based on data obtained through Unit Galakan Industri and participation in Skim Wajib Tayang, more than 100 films are set to compete in FFM 33. This number is proof of the rapid development of the national film industry.”
The FFM33 awards ceremony is set to take place on Dec 7 at Auditorium Seri Angkasa at RTM in Kuala Lumpur, with the theme “emas” symbolising the evolution and success of Malaysian cinema.
“Under this theme, we are not only celebrating outstanding artistic works but also encouraging artists to continue producing films with exceptional commercial and artistic value,” said Datuk Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib, the chief executive officer of Finas, at the same press conference.
