It seems Chris Hemsworth can handle not only a large hammer, but also drumsticks.

The Australian actor is best known for playing hammer-wielding superhero Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films (2011 to 2022). The 41-year-old surprised about 70,000 fans on Aug 24 when he made a special appearance at English singer Ed Sheeran’s concert in Bucharest, Romania – as a drummer.

Sheeran, 33, later posted a video on Instagram with the caption: “Got @chrishemsworth to learn drums for my stadium show, find out why on his show.”

In the clip, Sheeran said Hemsworth emailed him in December 2023. The actor said he was exploring cognitive health and the benefits of learning an instrument for his docuseries, Limitless With Chris Hemsworth (2022 to present).

“And he came to visit me, and he’s learnt drums and he’s coming onstage in front of 70,000,” Sheeran said.

Hemsworth added: “I’ve been thinking about it... a lot. It’ll be nice to put this one to bed.”

The actor was then shown at Sheeran’s concert for the hit Thinking Out Loud (2014). The pop performer told the crowd that the Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024) star had been onstage playing the whole time, asking them to “make some noise for Chris Hemsworth”.

Backstage, Sheeran handed a trophy shaped like a hand holding drumsticks to Hemsworth to mark his “participation award” for “drumming excellence”.

Limitless With Chris Hemsworth, which debuted in 2022, put him through an extreme physical or mental challenge each episode to test emerging research on how one can unlock the body’s potential “superpowers” to perform better, fight illness and even reverse ageing.

Season Two of the show is slated to premiere in 2025. – The Straits Times/Asia News Network
