Malaysian filmmaker Syamsul Yusof and actress Ira Kazar have divorced after less than two years of marriage.
The Kuala Selangor Syariah Lower Court confirmed today (Sept 5) that Syamsul divorced Ira after she langgar takliq (breached conditions set by her husband during their marriage) on five counts since August.
Syarie judge Mohd Faizal Habib granted the divorce after Ira on Aug 21 filed for a cerai takliq (a divorce due to breach of contract or promise expressed by the husband after the solemnisation of marriage in accordance with Hukum Syara’ or Islamic rules and the provision under the State Islamic Family Law Act).
Lawyer Muhammad Fadhil Abd Razak, representing Ira, confirmed that Syamsul, 40, and Ira divorced outside of court.
“The court confirmed the documents (submitted by Ira) at around 10.30am earlier. Thanks to the court for resolving this quickly,” he told mStar, The Star’s Malay-language news portal.
Meanwhile Syamsul’s representative Azmi Mohd Rais said Ira had already started observing iddah (the waiting period after divorce) since Aug 14.
“The court confirmed that there was a breach of takliq on Ira’s part. It was done willingly without coercion,” he said.
Azmi added that the breach of takliq involved Ira’s social media posts, though he declined to specify the details.
For the record, Syamsul filed for a divorce from Ira on Aug 19, citing irreconcilable differences.
The hearing was initially scheduled for Sept 25 at the Syariah Lower Court in Gombak Timur, Selangor.
Syamsul and Ira secretly tied the knot in Thailand on Jan 6, 2023.
However, their relationship had been gossip fodder for most of the year as he was still legally married to his first wife Puteri Sarah Liyana at that time.
Puteri Sarah, 38, then went on social media to expose Ira as the cause for the rift in her marriage.
Syamsul and Puteri Sarah, who share two children, eventually divorced on June 14, 2023.
