It is not every day that a fan gets to sing with Jay Chou, which is why a young boy was caught crying on camera at the 45-year-old Mandopop star’s concert.

Chou recently performed four nights in Shenzhen, China, from Sept 12 to 15. After interacting with a 12-year-old boy at his show on Sept 14, he posted a clip on Instagram the following day.

In it, the boy asked to duet with Chou on his song Step Aside (2004). The boy’s mother was by his side, filming the interaction.

The boy asked: “If I sing it well, can you give me an autograph?”

To the boy’s delight, Chou replied: “You don’t need to sing well. I’ll give you an autograph no matter what.”

The two sang the chorus of Step Aside together, with the boy growing visibly emotional and tearing up by the end of the song. His mother could be seen wiping his tears away.

Chou wrote in his post: “Seeing this little boy come to my concert accompanied by his mother reminded me that my mother has also sat through three nights of my concert. Tonight (Sept 15) is my mother’s birthday, can everyone sing Listen To Mom for her?”

Listen To Mom is a song Chou released in 2006, with lyrics about treating one’s mother well.

Chou’s mother and his wife, Taiwanese-Australian model-actress Hannah Quinlivan, were both in the audience for his final Shenzhen concert.

Chou posted a photo of himself with his mother on Sept 15 after the show, wishing his mother a happy birthday and thanking his fans for singing to her.

The singer-songwriter is known to be filial and had named his 2003 album Yeh Hui-mei, which is his mother’s maiden name.
