Hong Kong actress Cindy Au, the ex-wife of actor Roger Kwok, has opened up about her struggles in the job market.
In a recent interview with Hong Kong media, Au shared that her job search has been tough as she’s a “fresh graduate”.
The former TVB star holds two bachelor’s degrees (Marketing and Management, Food and Nutrition). She graduated with a master’s degree in nutrition in 2023.
“People generally don’t expect someone my age to just be graduating. They usually think of graduates as being in their 20s.
“Some companies also prefer to avoid media attention, so it’s harder for me to find a job than most people,” the 44-year-old said.
Currently doing part-time research work at a university, Au admitted that she had not built her career properly and had "wasted lots of time" in the past.
The Devil Eye star, who made her debut in 1996, stepped back from showbiz in 2006 after marrying Kwok, 59.
The pair, who share two children, announced their divorce on May 2.
“I used to go to class reunions every day, and my classmates, who were the same age as me, all had high-paying jobs.
“Aside from being financially well-off, they were confident, sociable and articulate. I fell short in comparison,” she said.
Au recently shared her plans on taking more on-screen work as she “really needs money”.
In the latest interview, Au, who recently hosted the television programme Health Concern Group, said she needed more time to adjust to the entertainment scene.
“I write many scripts, but my memory isn’t as good as it used to be.
“I need to focus on my work now and can’t take a trip whenever I please like before. I need to plan my time well,” she added.
Au also mentioned that living alone has made her more frugal.
“I actually sold my car and now take the subway as much as possible to save money,” she said.
When asked about her divorce with Kwok, the actress simply responded: “I won’t say anything about that.”
