Cantopop trio Grasshopper recently had gigs in California on Sept 20 and 21, but one member was missing.
The group’s Edmond So and Calvin Choy broke out their signature dance moves onstage without Remus Choy.
On Oct 20, the 57-year-old singer revealed why, announcing in an Instagram post that he is recovering after undergoing surgery to remove a brain tumour.
He wrote: “The surgery went very well. I want to thank my family for their unwavering support and encouragement, and my brothers, who performed so mightily well in America during the time of my surgery. And most importantly, all the medical staff and my principal physician for helping me get back on my feet once more.”
Remus also thanked his fans and the media and asked for some privacy to allow him to rest and recover.
The bachelor added: “I believe my life from now on will be even more fantastic.”
The picture was accompanied with two photos, a selfie of himself with a shaved head and a close up shot of the long surgery scar on his scalp.
Grasshopper were formed in 1985, with So, 58, and brothers Calvin, 59, and Remus Choy. They got their start in the entertainment industry as backup dancers and singers for the late Hong Kong diva Anita Mui. They are known for songs such as Broken Hearts Club (1990), Passionate Samba (1991) and Baby, I’m Sorry (1993).
Their Re-union concert tour made a stop in Singapore at the Resorts World Ballroom in July. They appeared as a trio then, with Remus Choy dancing and singing onstage with his bandmates.
He was also present at the group’s concert at Foshan, China, in August and appeared to be in good health and sporting a full head of hair.
However, on Sept 16, he posted a reel of himself performing on Facebook with the caption: “Sometimes, you have to take a pause in life before moving forward again.”
Both So and Calvin Choy have not made public statements about the surgery, although the latter posted a video of himself at the gym on Oct 19 with the caption: “When you’re faced with something, there are only three things to do: accept it, confront it, solve it. Be bravely yourself.”
Aside from his career with Grasshopper, Remus Choy is also known as a celebrity chef. He is a keen cooking enthusiast and his YouTube channel Remus Kitchen, which focuses on his culinary pursuits and recipe videos, has over 200,000 subscribers. – The Straits Times/Asia News Network
