Hong Kong superstar Aaron Kwok was recently denied entry to the Sha Tin Racecourse, managed by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, for wearing a polo shirt instead of a suit.
According to reports, the Hong Kong Jockey Club upholds a dress code akin to five-star hotels to cultivate an elite clientele where attire reflects social status and affluence.
The guidelines are said to prohibit items such as T-shirts, sportswear, shorts, flip-flops and clothing with tears.
In a video posted on social media, Kwok was seen arriving at the venue with his wife, Chinese model Moka Fang, manager and a friend.
Just as the Heavenly King was about to enter the racecourse, he was stopped by a staff member.
When Kwok's manager asked if the actor could enter, the employee simply replied: “He’s not wearing a suit!”
Kwok’s friend then took off his own blazer and offered it to him. Other racing fans nearby were also seen offering their jackets to the star.
Throughout the whole ordeal, Kwok appeared calm. He was eventually allowed into the VIP section after a few minutes of negotiating with the staff.
This incident sparked heated discussion on social media.
A handful of netizens argued that these dress codes are outdated, noting that one's attire doesn't determine one's wealth.
Some also felt that it's impractical to wear a suit on a sunny day.
Meanwhile, others insisted that rules are rules and should be adhered to, regardless of one’s social status.
