John Mulaney is revealing how his relationship with Olivia Munn helped him through drug recovery with a little tough love.
The 42-year-old comedian opened up in his cover story with GQ for its 29th annual Men of the Year issue, candidly telling the publication about his drug addiction journey.
“There was a time when I would have told you that I could not fly, sleep or perform unless I had a Klonopin,” Mulaney admitted. “I would have said, ‘It sucks because I don’t always want to take Klonopin and Xanax, but I have to.’”
The SNL alum eventually checked himself into rehab for alcohol and cocaine in December of 2020. At one point he tells GQ he thought he would die. “I thought, ‘OK ... I’m going to totally slow down. That was like a Tuesday. And Thursday night, I did it again,” he said.
His now-wife, Munn, involved herself in his recovery process by administering random drug tests to make sure Mulaney stayed on track.
“It’s like a relief – I like to be able to not even have that be a question in her or anyone else’s mind,” said Mulaney. “Something about peeing in that cup is like, I’m walking this walk. It gives me confidence.”
During an appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers in 2021, the comedian called his wife “incredible” for walking him through his recovery and said she “held my hand through that hell.”
“She got to date me out of recovery, which is what they call a reverse-catch,” he joked. “It is a very, very lucky thing to have met this woman.”
