Singaporean actor Gurmit Singh recently gave the public a rare glimpse into his personal life as he spoke about his eldest daughter Gabrielle.
In an interview on CNA’s The Assembly, Singh, best known for his role in the sitcom Phua Chu Kang, revealed he had initial reservations about his daughter’s unconventional career path.
Gabrielle, 27, is a drag and burlesque performer who goes by the name Lychee Bye.
“So she has taken that path, and it was difficult at first... She does a show that’s not TV-friendly, for sure,” the 59-year-old comedian said.
Despite their differing perspectives on career and life choices, Singh emphasised his unwavering love and support for Gabrielle.
“At the end of the day, she’s still my daughter. Until the day I die, I will still love her.
“She’s still my flesh and blood. I’ll still be there in the blink of an eye if she needs me,” he added.
Singh likened this experience to his own journey, recalling his parents’ reactions when he chose to become a comedian and actor instead of a lawyer, judge or policeman, as they had hoped for.
“As far as Gabrielle is concerned, as a parent, as long as she’s happy, I’m happy.
“It may not be what I want her to be or what I had hoped she would choose, but as long as it’s legal and she’s happy with it, I’m happy with it,” he said.
Singh married his wife Melissa Wong in 1995, and they have two other children together – Elliot, 22, and Mikaela, 11.
