Cantopop stars Charlene Choi, 42, and Gillian Chung, 43, recently marked a milestone by performing their 100th show as the musical duo Twins in Singapore on Dec 28.
This remarkable achievement is part of their Twins Spirit Live Around The World tour and a cause for celebration, as the duo has been entertaining fans since its debut in 2001.
However, netizens seemed more focused on Chung’s appearance at the Singapore concert than the duo’s accomplishment.
Clips from the performance, which surfaced online, drew attention to Chung’s “rounder appearance,” as reported by Hong Kong portal Daily Dimsum.
The criticism didn’t stop there. Some netizens also commented on Chung’s energy levels during the show, claiming she appeared less enthusiastic and “awkward” compared to Choi.
It’s worth noting that Chung has faced weight fluctuations in recent times due to hormonal imbalances, which have been publicly reported.
Amid the online chatter, Choi came to her bandmate’s defense. She said that as long as Chung is happy and healthy, that is what truly matters.
Chung, on the other hand, acknowledged the challenges of their year-long tour and expressed her eagerness for a well-deserved break.
“I really need to take a proper holiday; I’ve already applied to the company. I need to rest and rejuvenate,” she reportedly said.
The Twins Spirit Live Around The World tour kicked off in Hong Kong in January 2023 and has since taken the duo to cities including Shanghai, Beijing, Vancouver, Las Vegas and London.
While Chung appeared fit at the start of the tour, rumours about her weight gain and lack of energy began circulating after the group's stop in Macao in September and subsequent shows in China in October.
However, fans who attended the meet-and-greet session and the concert in Toronto in November noted that Chung appeared visibly slimmer.
One attendee surmised: "Even if she's gained a bit of weight, she still looks stunning – especially up close."
