Hong Kong actress Michelle Wai is set to tie the knot on Feb 16.
As part of the traditional Chinese pre-wedding customs, a grand betrothal ceremony took place on Jan 9, during which Wai’s family received an array of lavish gifts meticulously curated by her fiance.
In photos shared by the 40-year-old star on Instagram, the gifts included boxes of gold jewellery – bracelets, necklaces, and earrings – with intricate designs symbolising prosperity and good fortune.
The offerings also featured traditional items like dried seafood, fruits, cakes, and more, all arranged in an opulent display that highlighted the couple’s wealth and the significance of the occasion, according to a Hong Kong news outlet.
Wai, who recently won the Best Actress award at the 61st Asia Pacific Film Festival for her role in The Last Dance, announced her wedding plans just six months ago.
She revealed that she will marry Dr Kenley Chau, the founder of a medical aesthetics company.
In her Instagram post, Wai also shared a photo with her fiance.
One notable picture shows her wearing a necklace adorned with gold pig pendants, a traditional symbol wishing for many descendants.
In the caption, Wai expressed her gratitude to her sponsors, writing: “So this is what a betrothal ceremony feels like!”
The post quickly drew congratulatory messages from fans and fellow celebrities.
Her manager joined in, commenting, “Another daughter of Emperor Entertainment is getting married – such joyful news!”
Emperor Entertainment, one of Hong Kong’s largest entertainment groups, has a reputation for sparing no expense when it comes to its artistes’ milestone celebrations.
Meanwhile, netizens couldn’t help but joke with comments like, “Those gold bangles are almost as big as your face!” and “You’ll need some muscles to carry all that gold!”
Reports suggest that the couple’s wedding will take place at a luxurious venue, with a guest list rumoured to include some of Hong Kong’s most prominent personalities.
