Taiwanese artiste Edy Hsiao recently dropped his debut solo album which features the track Three Dollars, dedicated to his wife Mei.
According to reports, the song was written as a tribute to Mei for standing by him during his lowest point in life, when he was left with just NT$3 (38 sen).
In an interview with Singapore media, Hsiao confirmed that the experience was real, revealing that it happened around the time boy band Energy – of which he is a member – went on hiatus in 2009.
“I already had a family and children, but my income was very unstable. I was constantly waiting for work, so I was really at a low point,” the 44-year-old said.
Reflecting on that difficult period, Hsiao said he’s grateful to Mei for never leaving his side and continuing to support him through the uncertainty.
“She never thought about leaving me because of our circumstances and worked with me to figure out how we could support the family and manage our finances,” he said.
The singer added that support from both his and Mei’s family helped them get through the difficult period while he waited for more work.
Beyond financial pressures, Hsiao and his wife each endured the loss of family members in four consecutive years.
“It started with my wife’s grandmother, followed by her mother, then my father and finally her father,” he said.
Hsiao admitted that the string of challenges back then took a toll on their relationship, and the couple had their share of arguments during those difficult years.
Despite everything they went through, Hsiao said he remains deeply grateful to Mei for standing by him.
He now describes her as the person who helps him keep moving forward whenever he feels he can no longer do so on his own.
For the record, Hsiao and Mei have been married since 2007. They have three children together.
