For many Malaysians, the testimonials coming out of the trial of a caretaker charged with neglect and mistreatment of a Down Syndrome child have been painfully disturbing.

It has resulted in an outpouring of sympathy and anger, with #justiceforbella trending as the rallying call for retribution against the alleged perpetrator for the atrocities inflicted on a helpless, disabled child. But Bella’s abuse is not an isolated case, and it only highlights every adult’s responsibility to protect every child from harm. And, this starts with caring and paying attention.
