In conjunction with International Women's Day (Mar 8), the Women's March Malaysia 2024 (WMMY 2024) will be taking place this Saturday (Mar 9) to encourage Malaysians from all walks of life to call for gender equality, justice and an end to all forms of discrimination against women and girls.

"This year marks the eighth installment of the Women's March Malaysia, and we will be marching on the streets of Kuala Lumpur with ten calls to action for justice and change which will be beneficial to the progress of the country as a whole," said the WMMY 2024 organising committee in a press statement.

The ten "calls to action" are to: "prioritise economic empowerment and development of the working class over corporations; declare climate crisis and include participation from women and indigenous persons; end all forms of violence and discrimination towards gender and sexual minorities; implement comprehensive sex education to protect and empower children's rights; implement immediate inclusive and accessible reproductive and mental health services in healthcare; ensure equal opportunities and participation for all at all levels of decision-making in political life; eliminate gender-based violence in private and public life; ensure gender-equal nationality laws; protect freedom of assembly and expression; and end all armed conflicts and liberation for all".

In the statement, the committee says that they have successfully notified the police of the march.

"We thank the officers at Ibu Pejabat Polis Daerah (IPD) Dang Wangi for their cooperation and maintain that all peaceful rally and assembly organisers be able to carry out their responsibilities under the law," it says, adding that all Malaysians are encouraged to join.

The march will start at 9am at SOGO Kuala Lumpur and participants will then march to Dataran Merdeka.

There is also limited edition WMMY 2024 merchandise - such as T-shirts, tote bags, hats, and others - available for purchase and all proceeds will go towards supporting the cause.
