What can parents do to help their children with vision problems?
Parents should know that myopia is mostly inherited. But something can be done to correct this defect in early childhood by following regular eye exercises with acupressure.
When the late US President Richard Nixon visited China, doctors who accompanied him were surprised to find many Chinese children in primary schools not wearing glasses like their counterparts in Hawaii. They found that all primary school children are taught in their first few years to follow regular daily exercises using acupressure points around the eyes. These exercises delay the onset and reduce the severity of myopia.
The Chinese experience has prompted Singapore to introduce similar eye exercises with some modifications. Their experience has been very positive.
There is no reason why Malaysian schools cannot follow China and Singapore to tackle the important problem of myopia in our children. The main problem is we are very sceptical about this.
Besides the above, parents should also take note of some of the findings by author Leo Angart of Denmark. Angart restored his own eyesight naturally without surgery. According to him good nutrition, such as vitamins A, B complex, C, D, and E, as well as calcium help to improve the eyesight as does eye exercises.
Angart also mentions a connection between carbonated drinks and sugar and the eyesight.
