Lowering the chances of developing diabetes in this high-risk group

Women who develop gestational diabetes can lower their risk of type 2 diabetes after that pregnancy by doing regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, eating a high-quality diet, consuming alcohol moderately (if at all) and not smoking. — Filepic

Women with a history of diabetes in pregnancy (gestational diabetes) can still reduce their chances of developing type 2 diabetes by adopting a healthy lifestyle, finds a study published on Sept 21 (2022) in The BMJ medical journal.

The results show that women who adhered to five key lifestyle factors – healthy weight (i.e. body mass index, or BMI), high-quality diet, regular physical activity, moderate alcohol consumption and not smoking – had a 90% lower risk of the disorder, compared with women who did not adhere to any.
