Tonnes of plastic find their way into the ocean each day, where they are often mistaken for food by sea creatures. Under the Washed Ashore project, volunteers collected around 17 tonnes of marine debris over five years, and turned the waste into 66 sculptures. Seventeen of these larger-than-life sculptures are now on display at the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, DC, until Sept 5. The sculptures reveal the wide range of plastic waste that ends up in oceans.
