The Macallan Celebrates The Journey Home With New Limited Edition Whisky

The Macallan A Night on Earth – The Journey celebrates the moment of reunion with loved ones during the festive season.

The journey home to see our loved ones during the festive season is an essential element of most of our lives, even more so during Chinese New Year in Malaysia.

There’s just so much to look forward to at the end of that journey – the familiar feeling of returning home, the warm embrace of family and old friends, the wonderful aromas of home cooked food, and of course, the vibrant festivities and celebrations filling the air with joy and happiness.

To celebrate this yearly tradition, The Macallan has released A Night on Earth – The Journey, a unique single malt Scotch whisky created to represent the journey we go through in order to spend these special times with those who mean the most to us, as well as those unique moments around the world when we come together.

This is the second release in the annual The Macallan A Night on Earth limited edition gifting series. The first one, A Night On Earth In Scotland, paid tribute to Scotland’s Hogmanay festivities and the universal joy of celebrating the change of year around the world.

The Journey is a natural continuation of that theme, as for many of us, the journey to return home to celebrate with our loved ones is an experience that many of us go through every year.

Continuing in the tradition of the series, The Macallan also worked with a renowned artist for this edition – acclaimed Chinese mixed-media artist Nini Sum, who produced an innovative, multi-layered pack for The Journey.

Each layer of the pack is imbued with meaning, beautifully representing the different stages of the journey to reunite with loved ones at New Year, and providing an exceptional unboxing experience.

The first layer depicts an expansive landscape – on the left, the night sky is strewn with stars and fireworks, progressing into a daylight scene of mountains wreathed with clouds on the right.

The second layer features a blue colour palette with contemporary urban scenery, creating contrast and surprise. Bright streaks of colour signify the mass movement of locals out of the city as they travel to visit family and friends.

The third layer, with its yellow and orange tones, symbolises the warmth of lantern light and the feeling of coming home.

“During this time of the year, people who work in big cities go through the world’s largest annual human migration to go back to their hometowns for that moment of reunion with their families and friends,” Sum said in a press release.

“When the fire is lit inside and paper lanterns hang from the roof, you know there is someone there waiting for you to come home so they can welcome you with a hot meal and a hug.

“I wanted to re-create that atmosphere, those precious moments of gathering and reunion under a bright moon bringing us all together.”

The flavour profile of the whisky itself also evokes some of Sum’s favourite New Year memories – from the effervescent burst of fireworks to the sweet smell of steamed rice pudding.

The nose of the whisky has notes of toasted oak and creamy steamed rice and coconut milk pudding, reminiscent of toasted oak emanating from the carts of the rice popcorn vendors on the brightly decorated streets of Shanghai.

“The steam coming off hot food during the New Year dinner is one of the most vivid ‘home’ feelings I remember,” Sum said.

On the palate, there is a burst of effervescent citrus fruits – lemon and lime with sweet creamy vanilla and toasted coconut, as well as a nuttiness that echoes the sunflower seeds Nini’s family shared as they laughed and talked about their wishes for the new year.

Bottled at 43% ABV, the whisky is created using a perfectly balanced combination of The Macallan’s exceptional sherry seasoned European and American oak casks together with American ex-bourbon barrels.

According to The Macallan’s Global Creative Director Jaume Ferras, the collaboration with Sum focuses on the idea of bringing something special back to your family when you return home.

“A Night on Earth – The Journey is the perfect whisky to savour at special moments, best enjoyed with friends, family and loved ones while reminiscing of the year past and looking to the future,” Ferras said.

To capture the essence of reunion during the joyous Chinese New Year celebration, The Macallan will be holding a consumer experience event titled “A Night On Earth - The Journey” at the Entrance Lobby, The Starhill KL to showcase the launch of the limited edition.

There, guests will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a curated tasting experience with the newly launched expression.
