An older person is defined by the United Nations as a person who is over 60 years of age.
However, in different communities and countries, this may vary. The terms used – “older persons”, “elderly” and “aged” – may be debatable too.
The International Day for Older Persons falls on Oct 1. When I sit back and think of the myriad of characters I have encountered, I feel I can categorise them from A to Z.
A is for the Adventurous ones, still merrily hiking or trekking or biking.
B is for the Broad-minded ones who are open to discussion on any topic.
C is for those Cool and Calm, Cheerfully unruffled by those who are not.
D is for Diplomatic and Dependable ones who keep the peace.
E is for the Emotional or Excitable ones, who display feelings that some others hide.
F is for those always Frank with their opinions, and very Forgiving towards those not agreeable.
G is for Generous ones who pay in cash or compliments, ignoring those who are Grumpy & Grouchy.
H is for Hospitable ones who readily welcome others to their home for meals or hanging out.
I is for Imaginative ones who display their artistic and creative ideas.
J is or Jovial, Joyful ones who brighten the environment.
K is for Knowledgeable ones who readily share their expertise, while some Know-alls are busily distracting others.
L is for Loyal ones who very quickly defend those they admire or completely trust.
M is for Modest ones who act ordinary though rich or highly talented – and end up highly respected!
N is for Nosy Parkers who try to entertain us with bits of juicy news.
O is for those Observant and Organised, who get things done properly.
P is for Pragmatic ones who kindly help to make some rules more flexible.
Q is for Quiet ones, whom we are lucky to have as good listeners!
R is the Rough Diamond who is helpful and kind, and Religious ones who conscientiously keep up with their prayers.
S is for Sentimental ones, reluctant to let go of “precious” collections.
T is for Traditional ones who faithfully keep up with rituals and ceremonies of olden times.
U is for Understanding ones, who view situations with a greater perspective than most.
V is for Vain ones who are dressed in trendy attire plus make-up.
W is for the Warm-hearted, very patient with the Whining and Worrying ones who enjoy being miserable.
X is for Excitable ones, electrifying the air with their energy.
Y is for the Youthful and Young-at-heart, bright and breezy in joining the younger ones in their activities.
Z is for those Zestful ones, ready to engage with new ideas and activities.
Of course nobody fits exactly in just one of those boxes – we are each a blend of several temperaments, which naturally makes us unique.
I have been blessed with friendships with young and old of different races and creeds. We are so comfortable with each other that silence or distance does not dilute the warmth and depth of our connection.
We keep in touch through Whatsapp messages or calls – sharing jokes and quotes, uplifting tales, weird and wonderful photography. Some of us exchange snippets of info on cooking and gardening, art and craft or other hobbies. There is much to laugh about, empathise with, to boost our morale, fill us with gratitude and goodwill, and maintain our peace of mind.
One does not have to wait for the International Day for Older Persons to celebrate old age. Be a buddy to your body – go for a walk in the park, give it a good rest after a busy day or do whatever relaxes you. Call up a friend to have a leisurely lunch together, or just say hello now and then.
What’s the point of growing old without joyful connections?
Whether mobile or not, treat yourself to something that will bring a smile to your face, be it a favourite drink or snack, memories of good times, looking out at the birds and plants, or playing with a pet. If you look hard enough, you will find something good in every day.
