White trainers are true all-rounders that go perfectly with almost any outfit. The only problem is that it takes next to no time before they have turned grey.

Everyone swears by a different method when it comes to shining up white shoes. This one really works, we've tried it!

All you need is three ingredients that you are certain to have at home: baking powder, tooth paste and washing-up detergent.

Here's how it works:

  • Mix a tablespoon each of toothpaste, baking powder and washing-up liquid in a cup or bowl (will create enough paste to clean more than one pair).
  • Moisten a toothbrush with water and dip it in the paste. Scrub the trainers with circular movements. Spend extra time on heavily soiled areas.
  • Leave the paste on the shoes for a few minutes.
  • Wipe them down with a damp paper towel or cotton cloth and leave the shoes to air dry.
  • Moistening the brush from time to time will make the paste more effective. – dpa
