If you love the kebaya, don't miss the chance to showcase it at the upcoming Lenggang Kebaya 2024 flashmob on Sunday (Dec 1), at 11am in Stadium Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur.

The event is organised by Locco (Local Companion) to celebrate and raise awareness about the kebaya as a symbol of Malaysia's cultural heritage.

This marks the second time the event is taking place in KL.

Locco's business development and event director Shamsul Bahrin Zainuzzaman describes Lenggang Kebaya as a unifying platform for Malaysians to embrace the kebaya as an intangible cultural heritage recognised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco).

"We aim to honour Malaysia's nomination of the kebaya to Unesco and highlight its cultural significance. The kebaya represents national pride, unity, and appreciation for our multicultural identity. By preserving the kebaya, we ensure future generations continue to cherish this elegant symbol of Malaysia’s shared cultural roots," said Shamsul in a phone interview.

The flashmob is expected to attract 600 to 700 participants.

"We are anticipating around 500 women in vibrant kebayas, accompanied by men in stylish batik shirts," Shamsul added.

Beyond Lenggang Kebaya, Locco has hosted other exciting cultural flashmob events, including Keretapi Sarong (KS) and Joget Lambak, a traditional group dance often performed at social functions.

KS, inspired by New York's No Pants Subway Ride, encourages Malaysians to wear their favourite sarong, batik or kain pelikat while commuting via public transport. This year, KS drew 15,000 participants in KL and about 25,200 nationwide.

At Lenggang Kebaya, participants can look forward to activities, cultural games and sing-along sessions led by volunteers. Highlights include a kebaya-sharing session, kebaya artwork, zapin dance classes, keroncong performances and a lively joget lambak.

Prizes will be awarded to the best-dressed participants, with the coveted title of 'Ratu Lenggang Kebaya' and over RM2,500 in prizes up for grabs.
