Not content with having revived goth style through the horror comedy show Wednesday, the show's star, Jenna Ortega, is also setting beauty trends.

Only a few days after showing off her chopped bob on social media, the American actress has propelled this fun and rebellious style to the rank of must-have haircut of the winter.

Recently, the bob tends to be one of the top hair trends. That said, it is constantly changing shape and style, with more or less volume, quirkiness, sophistication and movement.

This has been seen in recent years with the rise and fall of the French bob, the scandi bob, the airy bob, the fringed bob, the boyfriend bob, and so on. In other words, there are many, many versions of the bob already out there, rising and falling in line with fashion.

At the start of this new year however, it's a new kind of bob – wilder and more rebellious – that seems to be proving popular: the chopped bob, also known as a choppy bob or a shaggy bob.

This haircut has been thrust to the forefront by the star of the hit series Wednesday.

On December 17, the American actress – who starred in the series Jane The Virgin before taking over the cult role of Wednesday Addams in the Netflix horror comedy – posted a picture on Instagram showing off her new haircut.

Fans were astonished to discover that the young star had swapped her long locks for a more rebellious bob, the famous choppy bob. And it did not take more than that to make this cut ultra trendy.

After being flooded with comments, each more adoring than the next, Ortega no doubt realised that, in the space of a few days, her simple snap had paved the way for a new hair trend that's impossible to ignore.

And, unlike a lot of beauty inspirations, this doesn't seem to be a short-lived trend – far from it. In reality, it probably even precedes Ortega's famous picture.

In its Beauty Trends Report, published in mid-December, the beauty platform LookFantastic was already reporting search interest up +550% for the terms "chopped bob haircut", showing a definite craze for this style.

The star of Wednesday then fuelled this burgeoning trend with her Instagram post.

On TikTok, users have already appropriated this hair inspiration, with nearly two million views and counting for the #choppybob hashtag.

What makes a choppy bob?

So what exactly is the chopped bob? Looking at the photos posted by the American actress, but also by her own hairdresser David Stanwell, it seems that this is a bob that is neither sophisticated nor strict.

On the contrary, it is more grungey than ever, but without lacking the glam touch that makes all the difference.

It's an ultra-layered bob, slightly long, with a maximum of volume, seemingly inspired by the shag and mullet cuts that have been popular in recent seasons.

And to top it off, the cut is not only easy to recreate, but also very simple to maintain. So many reasons to make it a must-have cut for the beginning of the year. – AFP Relaxnews
