The Tony Awards is not as well known as other awards shows, but remains a big deal in the entertainment industry.

There is even a term called EGOT. It is an acronym for Emmys, Grammys, Oscars and Tonys – the esteemed designation given to people who have won awards at all four of them.

On Sunday (June 11), the 2023 edition of the Tony Awards took place in New York City. It saw stars from the Broadway scene (and more) gathering to celebrate the biggest and brightest names in theatre.

These largely being people who regularly put on a show for a living, there are no surprises then that it was as lively as possibly in terms of fashion.

The red carpet was a focus for the guests to showcase their style, where they posed and preened for the cameras.

Women wore colourful gowns. The men? colourful suits.

Silhouettes were big and dramatic, as well. Of course, there were a few who stood out a lot more with their outrageously daring choices.

Lupita N'yongo for example, wore a breastplate made from a mold of her own body.

"Honoured, humbled, strengthened and energised to don this breastplate created by (Misha Japanwala), which she cast and molded of my body," the actress commented in an Instagram post.

Japanwala is a Pakistani artist and fashion designer, whose work is rooted in the rejection and deconstruction of external shame attached to one’s body.

Actress Jessica Chastain wore a hard-to-miss Gucci design that came with a cape. Her bright yellow dress featured a sculpted bodice and sweetheart neckline, plus an ever-so-slightly ruffled hem.

The men, like actors Erich Bergen and Justin Cooley, plus playwright Jordan Coope, did away with the usual black suits or tuxedos.

These daring gents instead opted for unconventional shades like green and orange, or even florals for their ensembles – which takes a lot of guts to pull off.
