Set aside your micro-mini skirts, because the look of the moment belongs to skirts of the longer variety.

Maxi skirts and long, voluminous options are what’s popular now, with celebrities and influencers styling these pieces in various ways.

The best thing about maxi skirts is how versatile they are – you can style them with pretty much any top or footwear, including boots, sandals, sneakers and even flip-flops.

A good maxi skirt can take you from daycare drop-offs to the office and from dinner to cocktail hour, all it takes is a change of shoes and maybe a jacket and you’re good to go.

Denim is huge right now, and styling a long denim skirt has never been easier.

Marie Claire recommends trying out an all-denim ensemble by styling a long jean skirt with a denim top and adding a pop of colour with a suede bootie to really emphasise the maximalist western look.

For the office, Stitch Fix suggests wearing a crisp, white button-up shirt tucked completely into your maxi skirt.

“Roll up your sleeves, don your maxi skirt and wear a pair of pointed toe pumps for the ultimate power outfit,” advises the site.

For inspiration for a special occasion or red carpet event, check out how actress Sveva Mariani styled a floral lace maxi skirt.

At the 18th Rome Film Festival, she paired it with a draped leather panel top and golden leather sandals.

Finally, if you’re travelling anywhere cold for a break, layer a long skirt with warm leggings, boots, coat and turtleneck or scarf to give yourself a winter chic vibe.
