Style Watch: Malaysian emcee Racheal Kow likes to challenge fashion norms

Bravo Events general manager Racheal Kow’s versatile style translates to several ways – being able to rock a preppy varsity jacket one day, and the next, showing up in a formal outfit complete with a tie. She can also be dolling herself up in girlier, lacy fabrics by day and changing into a black, edgy ensemble at night.

“If you would like me to describe my style, it would be something of an “edgy punk princess”. I want to look different and have a refreshed look each time,” says Kow runs PR campaigns and works with influencers and media within the beauty, fashion and lifestyle industries.

Her job requires dressing up during the week as she runs events of varying themes, while many weekends are taken up with emcee-ing weddings.

“Friends also seek my help with styling them so I do that in my free time too, and I am now working on a clothes rental service, as too many people are loaning my precious pieces hence the idea of just providing a loan service,” she says.

“I am someone who likes to challenge the norm, especially when I am more towards the plus size arena. I love experimenting with style and I like to play with colours, silhouettes, textures and styles. I love loud items, for example really unique tops or items in neon colours,” says Kow.

What is your favourite go-to look?Anything leather like as that makes me feel most comfortable. I love my shorts, either my go-to with sequins or leather-like material.

If I feel like I am dressed down, throwing on a fancy jacket always makes the whole outfit elevated.

I love jackets, I have easily over 100 of them, it’s the easiest way to look smart or fashionable.

What are your three must-have style/beauty items?

Dior chunky bracelet from the mens collection, a gift from my boss last Christmas; Le Labo Noir29, I have been hooked since my first bottle, a gift from my Le Labo Clients; and boots – I know it’s a bit warm or weird to wear boots in Malaysia but I am so used to it. And boots always give off that rock chick vibe which I love.

What trend would you most like to see disappear?

Maybe Crocs but I see them making a big comeback with amazing marketing materials and in fact, I am considering getting them for myself, haha.

Personally I think skinny jeans are out of season for now (Q3 2024) and baggy pants are coming back in style.

Another thing I would also like to see disappear – those thongs/slippers with the blue straps and white base.

Who would you consider a style icon and why?

I don’t have a specific style icon but I do take inspirations from fashionistas from around the world on social media. I also like Jeremy Scott for his quirky out of this world style, the need to be bold and loud, I really love that. I also love how the local scene is fast becoming the next big thing, making waves in foreign countries, people like Motoguo, A Jane just to name a few.

What are three key pieces everyone should have in their wardrobe?

Little Black Dress: A very high quality little black dress as a staple, cliche but so true, you can dress it literally up or down depending on the look you want to achieve.

Nice vintage preppy or leather jacket: One that you can throw on for an airport look and can take you from the airport to a fine dining restaurant with a pair of kitten heels.

A good lacy bra: Contrary to popular belief that inner wear should stay inside, a good lace bra makes a fashion statement even with a little peek-a-boo.

If you’re daring enough. I sometimes wear mine outside too, over a white shirt or black long sleeved see-through top.
