DOXA dives once again into the world of Clive Cussler, the famed American adventure novelist whose works – of which over 100 million copies were sold worldwide –have largely contributed to Doxa’s profile.
The brand’s latest release marks the second chapter in its homage to the novelist who greatly popularised its SUB diving watches across the globe.
The SUB’s iconic orange dial is perfectly in character on the wrist of Dirk Pitt, the hero of Clive’s novels.
The late author was a dedicated shipwreck hunter and had founded non-profit organisation National Underwater and Marine Agency (Numa) in 1979 to preserve maritime and naval history besides searching for lost ships of historic significance.
While his novels weave together historical mysteries and epic adventures, the author and explorer always wore a Doxa SUB, thus continuing to inspire the brand and prompting this new tribute to him.
The special-edition SUB 300T Sharkhunter Clive Cussler is made of stainless steel with an aged patina, just like the first SUB 300T Clive Cussler presented last year in New York, US.
The watch is designed for an adventurer.
The hallmark of this special series is its black Sharkhunter dial – displaying hours, minutes, seconds and date – adorned with striking white hands and indexes.
A distinguishing feature is the elegant compass rose marking the four cardinal points -- north, south, east and west.
This emblem of exploration and adventure serves as a poignant reminder of the mysteries hidden beneath the waves and the treasures to be discovered.
For Clive, the compass rose was far more than a navigational tool; it embodied the very spirit of adventure, with each direction symbolising a new possibility and a mystery waiting to be unraveled.
The North, often associated with guidance and constancy, represents the relentless pursuit of truth and discovery.
The South, with its connotations of the unknown and exotic, evokes the many uncharted territories Clive dreamed of exploring.
The East, symbolising beginnings and a new dawn, serves as a constant reminder of the innovation and curiosity that drove him to write and explore.
Finally, the West, the land of setting suns and conclusions, represents the fulfilment of quests and the uncovering of hidden treasures.
Just like its predecessor, SUB 300T Sharkhunter Clive Cussler’s caseback is engraved with the names of shipwrecks and other historical artifacts discovered or explored by Numa, hence creating a tangible link to maritime history and adventure.
Equipped with a Swiss automatic movement – with exclusive Doxa motifs – operating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations/hour (4.0 Hz), this watch offers a comfortable power reserve of approximately 38 hours.
A date window at 3 o’clock and a screw-down crown round off the timepiece that has a 42.5mm case and is water-resistant to 300m.
The watch comes with both the famous “beads of rice” metal bracelet in aged steel just like the case, and a sportier, lighter black FKM rubber strap.
Both feature a folding clasp with wetsuit extension.
Each watch is discreetly and individually engraved with its exclusive serial number as one of 93 − to mark Clive’s 93rd birthday − watches (XX/93) on the inside of the lugs.
A portion of the sales from this special edition will be donated to Numa, which turns over all artifacts to state and federal authorities or donates them to museums and universities.
Clive’s son, Dirk says, “The relationship between Doxa and my father Clive Cussler, as well as with our family today, has always been much more than just a business partnership.
“It’s a purposeful and enduring collaboration that began in my father’s novels, and continues today for the benefit of Numa.
“I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Doxa for honoring my father’s legacy with a timepiece that so uniquely illustrates his talent, originality and passion for exploration.”
Clive, whose books have been published in more than 40 languages in over 100 countries, died in 2020.
Doxa CEO Jan Edöcs says the brand is paying tribute not only to Clive’s talent as a writer, but also to the close ties forged between the Doxa team and the Cussler family.
“Clive Cussler’s legacy continues to inspire us, and is just as much a part of the brand’s story we continue to write,” he adds.
Doxa was born in Le Locle, in the heart of Swiss watchmaking, in 1889.
In 1967, the brand made available to the general public a diver’s watch featuring a unidirectional rotating bezel to monitor dive time and ensure a safe no-decompression ascent back to the surface.
With radical innovations, the Doxa SUB became an easily recognisable timepiece with the hallmark orange dial.
