Load up on tradition with these sweetcake inspirations.
TRADITIONAL sweetcakes are those that have withstood the test of time and enjoyed by many generations of the community. Among the Chinese and Peranakans, the angku kuih has a special place as it is both a sweetcake for the everyday as well as festive occasions. A red ku is often served at birthdays for its auspicious connoctations, shaped like either a tortoise or a peach. Glutinous rice flour is the basis of the dumpling skin, but the filling can vary. Sweetened mung bean paste is the classic filling but grated coconut and crushed peanuts are also popular, along with lotus seed and red bean paste.
