Raising awareness about early lung cancer screening

WHEN it comes to battling lung cancer, it is a race against time, a run to save lives.

In conjunction with Lung Cancer Awareness Month, Sunway University’s School of Medical and Life Sciences is partnering with Lung Cancer Network Malaysia, Sunway Biological Society, Sunway Future Nurses Club, and Sunway Sports Council to organise the inaugural Ready, Set, Breathe! Lung Cancer Awareness Charity Run on Nov 11.

This run is about breaking the silence on lung cancer through the power of early screening.

According to the latest available data from the National Cancer Registry (NCR 2012-2016) and the Malaysian Study on Cancer Survival (MySCan 2018), lung cancer is the leading cancer and leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Malaysia.

Almost 95% of patients in the country are diagnosed too late – at stage three or stage four – where treatment is more challenging, costly and less effective.

These findings highlight the urgency of promoting awareness of screening for individuals at risk of lung cancer and the importance of early detection, as early-stage lung cancer has a good prognosis and can often be cured with surgery as part of multi-modal therapy.

Participants in Ready, Set, Breathe contribute to raising funds for lung cancer research through beneficiaries, Lung Cancer Network Malaysia (LCNM) and National Cancer Council, and spreading awareness of the importance of cancer screening.

Those who take part in mini games stand a chance of winning exciting prizes from one of its main sponsors, Alba Malaysia.

If you have questions about how these cancers can be detected early, you can learn directly from the experts of LCNM, Makna, and the Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Society of Malaysia (NPCSM) about the various forms of cancer including lung and nose cancer.

The Sunway University Department of Nursing will be on standby to provide basic health and blood pressure screening, while representatives of the NPCSM will provide free on-site nasopharyngo endoscopies.
