UMT to represent country at sailing event in Italy

Universiti Malaysia Terengganu’s (UMT) sailing team has made history as the country’s sole representative to qualify for FISU World University Championships in Italy.

Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said the team, comprising six UMT students, was set to compete in the tournament scheduled from June 4 to 11.

He said the achievement not only elevated the country’s image globally but also highlighted the exceptional quality of public higher education institution students.

“The Higher Education Ministry strongly encourages students to become involved in sporting activities.

“UMT students’ participation at this international tournament will elevate the country’s image.

“Additionally, students serve as ambassadors for Malaysia,” he told reporters during his visit to UMT.

The six students representing UMT at the tournament are Nur Muhammad Aqil Nadzri, Mohamad Hanif Mohd Shafiee, Nur Zulaikha Mohd Zafarin, Nur Sofea Balqis Kamal Azalan, Nur Ainul Izzati Zil Husham and team leader Muhammad Faris Aiman Basri.

Muhammad Faris said the team was undergoing intensive training to prepare for the championship.

Each day, four hours is dedicated to training and enhancing their skills.

“We will be competing with 16 teams from the United States, Ireland, Germany, Japan, China and France.

“Despite the challenge, we will strive to achieve a podium position at the tournament,” he added.
