Young champs shine at global golf meet in S’gor

Malaysian youths among players from 12 countries at championship aimed at boosting local talent, sports tourism

Youths aged 12 to 18 from all over the world showed their sporting prowess at the Selangor International Junior Golf Championship 2024 at Seri Selangor Golf Club in Petaling Jaya.

The event was organised by Universiti Utara Malaysia International School Melaka (UUMISM) in cooperation with Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS).

The championship, now in its third edition, involved 132 players from 12 countries including South Korea, China, India, Bangladesh and Australia.

This year’s event also saw the participation of a golf team from Selangor.

State youth, sports and entrepreneurship committee chairman Najwan Halimi said this laid the foundation for Selangor’s participation in the upcoming Sukan Malaysia (Sukma) this August.

“This is also a programme for us to gain exposure at an international level.

“Such events help identify and develop potential champions.

“This is an opportunity to encourage sports tourism,” said Najwan after the prize-giving ceremony.

For example, he added, the Selangor International Junior Golf Championship 2024 boys’ individual category winner was invited to play at the PKNS Selangor Masters Golf Championship which started yesterday.

The boys’ individual category was won by Shijun Jing from China.

Shinichi Suzuki from the Philippines came in second followed by Australia’s Josiah Edwards.

Byun Jiyool from South Korea won the girls’ individual category with Thailand’s Chutimon Rujiranan taking second and Malaysia’s Foong Zi Yu (from Selangor) completing the podium finish.

For the boys’ team category, China came in first, followed by the Philippines and India.

South Korea won the girls’ team category while Malaysia and India took second and third places, respectively.

Also present were UUMISM founder David Jeong and Selangor state finance officer Datuk Dr Ahmad Fadzli Ahmad Tajuddin as well as PKNS Golf Management Services Sdn Bhd chief operating officer Zubir Idrus.
