THE inaugural Tourism Golf Malaysia – Amateur Golf Tournament is poised to establish Malaysia as a premier golfing destination for tourists worldwide.

Set to attract 240 local and international golfers, this two-day event will take place on July 27 and 28 at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (KLGCC) in Kuala Lumpur.

Tournament organising committee chairman Datuk Richard Lee said the tournament would position Malaysia as a year-round golfing haven.

“Malaysia boasts stunning golf courses right in the heart of our cities and we want to promote golf tourism here.

“We also want to showcase our beautiful courses to international tourists,” Lee said during the launch at KLGCC, Kuala Lumpur.

Tourism Malaysia director-general Manoharan Periasamy, who launched the tourney, said the event would expose tourists to the many golf courses in Malaysia.

“We have more than 200 golf courses in the country, and some are listed as premier courses among tourists from China.

“Other countries have been leveraging on golf tournaments to boost tourism and we hope this event can do the same and attract golfers from countries around the world,” he said.

In addition to promoting tourism, the event supports a charitable cause, with RM20,000 earmarked for KLGCC caddies’ welfare.

Interested participants can join at RM8,000 per flight of four or eight slots over the two days, which includes green fees, shared buggies and caddies, goodies, refreshments, lunch, and dinner.

The tournament will follow the System 36 format, which is a same-day/one-day golf handicapping system when many participants do not have official handicaps commonly used in charity events and corporate outings.

Winners will have the opportunity to take home a variety of golf items, including the latest TaylorMade Qi 10 drivers, as well as air tickets or travel vouchers.

Additionally, a Mazda car awaits any golfer who scores a hole-in-one on July 28.

Limited slots are available, and interested parties are encouraged to register by calling 012-261 8484.

Sponsors for the event include HSBC Malaysia, Visa, Mazda, KLGCC, Air Asia, Batik Air, BMW, Luen Heng, Carlsberg, MST Golf, and CIT Travel, with Star Media Group Bhd and The Edge serving as media partners.

Also present were Tourism Golf Malaysia Tournament secretary Thad Foo, Sime Darby Property Bhd non-independent executive director Tan Sri Jaganath Derek Steven Sabapathy, tournament committee member KP Low and KLGCC general manager (Leisure) Adam Calver.
