ONE would be forgiven for thinking that Manchester United just won the league this week, given all the noise coming from Old Trafford.
It’s been non-stop gloating by the Red Devils and only because they managed a win over Southampton – yes Southampton – and Liverpool lost.
And then they beat lowly Barnsley 7-0 in the Carabao League Cup in midweek.
To be sure, Manchester United have not won the league going on 12 seasons now.
In the last dozen years, they have spent billions of pounds and have absolutely nothing to show for it, apart from a couple FA Cups and League Cups and a solitary Uefa Cup.
That’s all. And that’s why it’s hard to comprehend why they go about making so much noise over a win against Barnsley – a club with their heels dug in League One – that’s two divisions down from the Premiership.
In the late kick-off today against Crystal Palace, Manchester United should win and win quite comfortably.
But maybe we should still caution Erik ten Hag and his squad that the Eagles are by no means pushovers, more so at Selhurst Park.
Failure by ten Hag and his expensively assembled squad to win by a decent margin with a reasonably good performance will only bring to bear more scorn on Man United.
A solid 3-0 win would be considered adequate for a club that, when going around bragging about all sorts of things, also says they are the biggest in the world.
They need to start showing that consistently, on the pitch, and at Crystal Palace; that would be a good start indeed, lest all those noises turn to silence and self-pity, a regular staple over the last decade and a bit.
