Malaysia will play host to a major international sporting event this year.
The Malaysian Cricket Association (MCA) has been entrusted with staging the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2025, which will mark the nation’s return to hosting a global cricket event for the first time in 16 years.
The last time Malaysia held an event of such magnitude was the ICC U19 Men’s World Cup in 2008.
It was a tournament that unearthed the talents of Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson, Trent Boult, Tim Southee and Steve Smith, to name a few.
The year’s tournament is expected to follow in a similar fashion, showcasing the world’s best young women cricketers in an event that will include 41 matches from Jan 13 to Feb 2, with the opening scheduled for Bayuemas Oval in Pandamaran, Klang, Selangor.
The showdown will feature 16 teams engaged in fierce competition and structured in a round robin format before the top two teams from each group progress to the Super Six stage, carrying forward their points from the earlier matches.
The top two teams from each Super Six pool will then advance to the semi-finals, before the tournament culminates with the final on Feb 2 at Bayuemas Oval.
MCA president Mohammed Iqbal Ali Kassim Ali said they were delighted to host the U19 Women’s T20 World Cup.
“Hosting the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup is a huge task, but one that we undertake with pride on behalf of the nation.
“This tournament is not just about cricket. It’s also about empowering young women, creating opportunities for them and leaving a legacy that will inspire future generations,” he said.
The matches will be held at four venues across the country – Bayuemas Oval and UKM-YSD Oval in Bangi, Selangor; Dato Dr Harjit Singh Johor Cricket Academy and Oval in Johor Baru, Johor and Borneo Cricket Ground in Kuching, Sarawak.
“We believe these venues will provide the perfect backdrop for this milestone event, with each ground highlighting Malaysia’s world-class facilities and hospitality,” said Mohammed Iqbal.
“Women’s cricket is on an incredible growth trajectory, and we are part of this journey.
“This tournament will not only bring forth the best young talent in the world but also reaffirm Malaysia’s commitment to developing and promoting cricket at all levels.
“The U19 Women’s T20 World Cup aligns with the ICC’s global strategy to drive transformative growth in women’s cricket.
“And this event aims to inspire and empower young women, leaving a lasting legacy in Malaysia by increasing participation and opportunities in the sport.
“The tournament will also focus on holistic development in areas such as integrity, brand building and media interaction.
“Match officials will also benefit from exposure to the highest standards of officiating.”
To build excitement leading up to the tournament, an ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup trophy tour is underway across Malaysia, visiting iconic locations and engaging fans nationwide.
It is currently in Sarawak on a public tour of Borneo Museum, Darul Hana Waterfront and Viva.
On Jan 8 and 9, it will be at the Adiwira Tournament which will see about 400 school-children involved in the promotion of grassroots cricket at UKM-YSD Oval in Bangi.
“The trophy tour is an invitation to every Malaysian to be part of this historic event,” said Mohammed Iqbal.
“It’s a chance to engage with the sport, celebrate our culture and build excitement for what promises to be a memorable tournament.”
As a dress rehearsal for the World Cup, Malaysia hosted the ACC Women’s U19 Asia Cup in Bayuemas Oval last month, when India won the inaugural title.
They defeated Bangladesh by 41 runs, thanks to a classy contribution from Gongadi Trisha and an impressive showing with the ball.
India managed 117-7 in their 20 overs with Trisha registering a knock of 52. Bangladesh was bowled out for 76.
