THE bright yellow food trailer in Bandar Kinrara, Puchong in Selangor, is another step on Tharrshaan Kanaka Raja’s, 21, path to his dream of opening a restaurant.
He started a home-based Indian food catering and delivery business during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.
Business was doing well during the movement control order but slowed down later after the movement restriction was lifted.
Tharrshaan said he found that as most of his customers had returned to work, they did not need his services anymore.
So, he opened a stall that was easily accessible in Jalan BK 5/2 in 2022.
“The food is cooked at home by my aunt with the help of other family members, and delivered daily.
“My mother handles operations at the food trailer,” said Tharrshaan, adding that he wanted to serve home-cooked meals.
To make his business stand out, Tharrshaan thought of offering customers a choice of curries and named his stall “Big Mommy Nasi Kandar”.
“Big Mommy is a direct translation of periamma, which is how Tamils address an elder maternal aunt.”
The stall’s name is apt because it is his periamma who does the cooking.
“Every day, we have chicken, fish and mutton dalcha for our customers, either individually or mixed.
“The dishes change daily depending on what we get from the market,” he said.
The curries served are on the thinner side and less spicy.
The spicy kick comes from the bestseller dishes, chicken varuval and chicken sambal. These aromatic and flavourful dishes are daily staples.
Other items on the menu include vegetable dishes like stir-fried mustard leaves, stir-fried cabbage and fried mushrooms.
Chicken cooked in soy sauce, fried chicken, fried fish and anchovy sambal can also be found on the menu.
A meal with one serving of rice, vegetables, chicken and a boiled egg would cost RM10.
With the addition of fish, prawn, squid or mutton, the price of the meal can go up to RM20.
The food is cooked in small portions and finishes fast.
The food trailer opens from 11am until 3pm daily, except Mondays.
