FOR the past 34 years, P. Gunasegaran has been walking 10km each way daily along Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd’s (KTMB) train tracks connecting Taiping and Bukit Merah to check for obstacles and damage.

The 59-year-old father of three is a KTMB patrolman and part of what is called the “Permanent Way Gang”, a team that walks along tracks to check for landslides, overgrown vegetation, faulty tracks or fallen trees.
