Young man’s rare ride for tradition

The ‘ding ding’ candy is broken down into smaller pieces using a metal hammer and cutter, and packed for sale.

STANDING beside his old red bicycle and using a metal hammer and cutter to break the traditional Chinese sweet treat known as “ding ding” candy is 23-year-old Voon Yun Kong.

Clad in shorts, T-shirt and a cap, with a traditional umbrella that has seen better days tied to his bicycle to provide some shade, the young man has no qualms about standing under the scorching sun to sell the candy made from sugar and maltose.
