FACE masks have appeared at the forefront of fashion trends due to the Covid-19 crisis.
However, the adoption of this trend has developed at varying rates among people from all walks of life.
Leading retailer AEON Co (M) Bhd, which operates a chain of superstores nationwide, has come up with its own way to sell a premium face mask – and at the same time, contribute part of it to a good cause.
The face mask is made locally by a homegrown accessories company that changed its business model after facing difficulties during the pandemic, which approached AEON management for assistance to sell the product.
“AEON would love to be the trendsetter to show that face masks will be part of our life. We want to contribute to the importance of the new lifestyle through this face mask by promoting continuous sustainable life, ” said AEON Retail Malaysia chief executive officer Shafie Shamsuddin during an interview at AEON Bandar Utama, 1Utama Shopping Centre in Petaling Jaya.
Shafie said that the sale of the face mask was also part of the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative.
From Sept 24 to Nov 15, RM1 from each sale of the face masks and its nano-mist safety packs will be donated to the AEON Di hatiku Fund, which is part of AEON CSR campaign.
Each face mask is priced at RM15, while a face mask set that comes with nano-mist safety packs is priced at RM29.90 each.
“We want to sell a million pieces of face mask within three months. RM1mil from the sales of these face masks and nano-mist safety packs will be contributed to the AEON Di hatiku Fund, ” he shared.
Shafie said that the RM1mil fund will be used to help people who have lose their jobs due to the pandemic, as well as individuals who want to set up a new business or start-ups for living.
“We are targeting phase 1 collection of RM366,000 to help 366 local entrepreneurs affected by Covid-19 to start a dropship business through the fund, in conjunction with Aeon’s 36th anniversary, ” he shared.
The company is also working on the dropship business programme to assist them, which include certain regulations and has a year-long commitment period.
He said, “We will choose those who are really committed to do this dropship business.”
Dropship means providing goods by direct delivery from the manufacturer to the retailer or customers.
“Buying this face mask from AEON saves money because it is of good quality. You are not only saving yourself, but you are also saving other people’s lives by sharing and contributing to their needs by giving them a way to start their new ventures, ” he highlighted.
On the features of the face masks, he said they were five-layered with built-in filter, washable and.hence usable for at least six months.
“The face masks are lab-tested by MY CO2 (KL) Sdn Bhd (a Shah Alam-based laboratory). Its Bacterial Filtration Efficiency (BFE) is tested at 85%, and it was accredited by the Department of Standards Malaysia, ” he pointed out.
This Malaysian Standard is identical with ISO/IEC 17025 published by the International Organisation for Standardisation.
“You can refresh your face masks every four hours by spraying this simple nano-mist. It smells good and fresh. This nano-mist is also portable and customers can carry it everywhere, ” he explained.
“As this face mask is eco-friendly, you don’t have to throw it away every time you use it and therefore we are also protecting the planet. I really like our customers to change their lives towards being more positive and getting used to the new normal behaviour, ” he said, adding that it was also in accordance with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
On how AEON plans to educate the public to buy the face mask, Shafie said that they would encourage all their customers who shop at AEON stores to scan QR code near the cashiers' counters to know more about the product, which educates them through various platforms including via videos.
They are also sharing the information on the product via AEON’s social media.
Additionally, he said that these face masks were strategically placed near the cashiers' counters and AEON representatives have been stationed there to assist customers to know more about the product.
On their targeted buyers, he said it caters to the needs of the people from all walks of life.
He said, “All of our customers who are looking for values. Customers who are concerned about the quality of product and their safety. This is something that can cater to everyone, whether they are students, housewives or working professionals.”
The face masks are available in different colours and also in a floral design, to suit the preference of their customers.
“You can adjust the size, and you can breathe easily when using the face mask, ” he added.
A customer, housewife Casey Chan, 56, bought two sets of the face mask with the nano-mist safety packs.
“I choose this face mask because of its quality, and I can wash it easily. It is recyclable, so I like it. I go to the gym so I can also use the nano-mist spray for this mat I bought today, ” the mother of three added.
As of Oct 13,2, 284 pieces of nano-mist safety packs and 10,858 face masks have been sold off to AEON customers. To date, the sale of the products has contributed to RM379,142 to the AEON Di hatiku Fund.
