New Sibu-Singapore direct flight can boost tourism

Chieng says the Sibu-Singapore direct flight should start by year end.

IF ALL goes according to plan, the new Sibu-Singapore direct flight can commence by the end of this year.

Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng said AirAsia was in its final phase of concluding a market research on this particular flight sector.

“This direct international flight will not only benefit Sibu but also surrounding areas such as Bintangor, Sarikei, Mukah and Kapit.

“This is because the requirement of one million population for the commissioning of any direct international flight has already been achieved by taking into account the population in this central region,” Chieng said at the inauguration of the Rajang River Festival at Pulau Li Hua in Sibu, Sarawak.

He said the proposal for the Sibu-Singapore flight sector was made during the second Sarawak Legislative Assembly meeting in July this year.

“As the gateway to the central region, Sibu should get this flight.

“Just like Miri is the gateway to the north of Sarawak and Kuching serves as the gateway to the south, where both cities have direct international flights,” he added.

Chieng said Sarawak Transport Ministry was expected to announce the good news about the Sibu-Singapore at the end of this year.

Once the direct flight was implemented, he said it would allow Sibu to be connected with Singapore.

It would also enable Sibu to promote its tourism products more effectively, said Chieng.

“This international flight will see Sibu get a lot of benefits, especially in terms of attracting more foreign tourists,” he added.
