Family members and friends can play an important role in suicide prevention, says Sarawak Public Health and Housing Deputy Minister Michael Tiang.
“Encourage the person to get help. They should talk to a doctor, counsellor, psychologist or call a helpline,” Tiang advised during the Sibu Division World Suicide Prevention Workshop.
His speech was read out by councillor Ling Hua Wee.
Tiang said no matter which era one was living in, victims of suicide were always found to be dealing with mental illness, emotional distress and unbearable stress.
“There is no single reason that drives a person to commit suicide,” he said.
Stressing that social isolation heightened the risk of suicide, he said talking to family and friends about suicidal thoughts could be one of the hardest steps to take but such support could make a real difference.
“I hope after this workshop, every one of you will be able to provide social support to vulnerable individuals and play a critical role in suicide prevention.
“The overall goal of this workshop is to serve as a catalyst for more non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to host awareness seminars and related activities on suicide prevention.
The event was jointly organised by Sibu Hospital Mental Health Association and Psychiatric Unit as well as Jalan Merdeka, Jalan Oya and Jalan Berjaya Village Development and Security Committee.
