WITH Deepavali just around the corner, shopping centres have been busy decorating their entrances and key areas in vibrant colours to reflect the season.

It is a feast for all the senses in the Klang Valley as the festive mood fills the air and malls treat visitors to performances, goodies and dazzling displays.

At Suria KLCC in Kuala Lumpur, visitors can expect to see a garden installation at its Centre Court complete with floral peacocks and a traditional Indian gazebo.

A 6m-wide rotating kolam and motion sensor lighting has pride of place in the garden.

Over in 1 Utama, Petaling Jaya, Bollywood-inspired decorations adorn the mall and a brilliant kolam takes centre stage at its Centre Court, in keeping with its theme “Shimmering Lights of Joy”.

Kiosks have also been set up to offer exquisite accessories and apparel as well as a tempting selection of savouries.

Visitors to Mid Valley Megamall, Kuala Lumpur, are greeted with decorative lanterns and floral garlands brightening the kolam area from above in the middle of the mall.

The shopping centre features several kolam with a modern touch of lights and acrylic jewels, adding a bit of bling to the occasion.

Meanwhile, Bangsar Shopping Centre in Kuala Lumpur has adorned its concourse atrium with a grand chandelier festooned with giant feathers, fabric and fairy lights to represent good luck and happiness.

An intricate kolam with colourful flower patterns is also on display at the annex linkway.

The main concourse hosts its Diwali Artisan Market, a collection of vendors selling a wide range of home-grown products, local traditional apparel, modern fashion and accessories, home decorations and snacks for the festivities.

The mall will also feature Indian classical dances and Bollywood rhythm dances on Oct 22 and 23 to add some spice to the festivities, alongside a fashion showcase on the popular kaftan.

Continuing with the cultural theme, Fahrenheit 88 in Kuala Lumpur is holding an “Art of Saree Gallery” exhibition until the end of the month.

An impressive range of sarees from all over India can be seen draped prominently in the mall, highlighting its beauty and style.

The shopping centre opened its first Indian fashion store this year, Yeshan Saree, which offers traditional Indian attire.

For a local spin on the holiday, head to Sunway Pyramid in Petaling Jaya or Sunway Velocity Mall in Kuala Lumpur to view their art installation, “The Tree of Lights”, which celebrates Malaysia’s diverse cultures.

The latter mall’s team of decorators took two months to plan and realise their vision, reusing a previous Christmas tree structure with added decorations.

Partly made from eco-friendly materials, the teams took three days to finish setting up the display.

The decorations aim to spread awareness of the importance of recycling.

Designs and decorations from previous years were recycled and modified into a new design.

For example, recycled bottles are used to make flowers.

Other recycled items include beads, cloth lanterns, metal standees and the tree’s water fountain base.

At IOI City Mall in Putrajaya, a majestic peacock and kolam fountains commemorate the upcoming Hindu festival.

Themed “Dazzle Diwali”, the mall’s team took a month to fabricate and upcycle decorations, refurbishing materials from last year with new elements while retaining the traditional and rich culture of the celebration.

The mall will also see various activities and performances, such as traditional dance shows, free henna painting and arts and crafts workshops.

In the meantime, those visiting Setia City Mall in Shah Alam, Selangor will be greeted with a grand kolam at its north entrance.

Embracing the theme “Lights of Deepavali”, the mall celebrates the triumph of light over darkness with its generous use of colours and patterns throughout its building.
