Oktoberfest returns to Penang after two-year hiatus

THE Malaysian German Society's (MGS) Oktoberfest returned to Penang on Friday (Oct 21) night, after a two-year hiatus.

Nearly a thousand guests lapped up the joyful atmosphere, enjoying scrumptious German delicacies and beer while dancing to music from the Frankenrauber live band.

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the past two challenging years reminded one to appreciate the simple things in life.

"Through events like this, the MGS continues to maintain the warm friendship enjoyed by the people of our two countries," he said in his speech.

Also present at the event was German ambassador to Malaysia Dr Peter Blomeyer, honorary consul of Germany in Penang Datuk Hans Brenner, MGS president Dr Wolfgang Mark, former chief minister Lim Guan Eng and state tourism and creative economy committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin.

The MGS had been organising the Oktoberfest here annually since 1972 until the pandemic in 2020. The event continues with another session on Saturday (Oct 22) night from 7pm.

While it is traditionally a beer festival in Germany, over here it serves more as a social event to bring together communities from various backgrounds, as well as a highlight on the state's tourism calendar.
